Food Supply Solutions

Our Health, Environment and our Food Supply are all intertwined. We care about protecting the environment because to us that’s the first step in protecting peoples’ health. Because our pollinators are in serious danger of elimination, Hippocrateas donates to saving the Bees–to save them we need to reduce glyphosate and other pesticides. If you don’t realize how the bees health affects your own, please see the issues and links below to learn more about how each affects you and your family and what you can do to help change these situations.

Pesticides & Fertilizer

Chemical Pesticides have only been used on food crops since the 1940s. Since that time many cancers and diseases have developed and expanded in numbers, is this just coincidence? Monsanto is notorious for toxic products, Agent Orange, DDT, PCBs… Their most revered pesticide, Round Up surely is an environmental disaster. Yet Bayer could actually be the worst of all the chemical manufacturers. If this comes as a surprise, look up IG Farben, World War II.

Currently Bayer is working toward eliminating the Bees. Personally it still stuns me that the chemical and pesticide companies have been able to gain let alone retain control of the world’s seed and food supply.

If you want to help turn things around, consider Boycotting Bayer products and Monsanto’s Round Up until they stop making bee-killing, people-killing pesticides. Bayer products to avoid include: Aleve, Alka Seltzer, One A Day Vitamins, Flintstone Vitamins, and of course Bayer Aspirin. And without saying please avoid using their lawn care products at home or in your yard. GMOS

GMOS: Untested, Unsafe, Unnatural, UnAmerican

Genetically Modified Organisms are created when a plant is altered to be pesticide resistant.  Corn for instance is inserted with DNA from Bacillus Thuringiensis Bacteria to create BT corn. While BT corn is capable of warding of crop-destructive insects, it’s also capable of causing disease in humans and may be linked to organ damage, breast, ovarian and prostate cancer as well as infertility.

The majority of GMO crops are created to withstand heavy application of Monsanto’s ‘Round Up’. Dr. Ron Huber, a renowned plant pathologist and professor at Purdue University has noted that,

Round Up was first patented as a mineral chelator. It immobilizes nutrients, so they’re not physiologically available for your body.

“You may have the mineral [in the plant], but if it’s chelated with glyphosate, it’s not going to be available physiologically for you to use, so you’re just eating a piece of gravel,” Dr. Huber says.

Dr. Huber also has found a previously undetected organism in GMO plants that is completely new to science and worse, capable of causing sudden miscarriages. Still despite this and other warnings from scientists and experts alike, the US Government still won’t protect us or demand GMO food be labeled!  Please keep in mind this food was never tested on humans and still has not been tested for safety, yet it’s infecting our food supply. Amazing that some of the most respected politicians in this country could herald GMOs as virtuous.  One thing’s for sure, GMOs should never have been allowed into our food supply without testing in the first place. GMO Foods and food ingredients include:

  • Corn, Corn Syrup (BT corn causes male sterility, damages liver, kidneys…)

  • Cotton, Cottonseed oil (Farmers have observed their animals  that graze on GMO cotton tend to get sick and die prematurely)

  • Sugar Beets (most Sugar in the U.S. is now derived from GMO sugar beets)

  • Soy (GMO soy is linked with sterility, hair growing in the mouth–that is nasty)

  • Canola Oil (Rapeseed, produces long chains of non-digestible trans fatty acids)

  • Rice

  • Papaya

  • Apple (Arctic variety)

  • Yellow Squash, Zucchini

  • Alfalfa, sadly the first perennial approved for genetic modification by President Obama

  • Salmon, Pending

  • Potato, Pending

Coming Soon UNLESS we stand up and demand this end!:

  • Cabbage laced with Scorpion Poision (not kidding!)

  • Wheat that causes Liver Failure (again, not kidding)

If we can’t get our government to stop it, we can Boycott the food makers that utilize GMO ingredients.

SOIL HEALTH

The Soil

Soil health, soil strength, soil quality is defined as the continued capacity of soil to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains us all– humans, plants, and animals.  To provide food for all we must take care of the soil today.

Aldo Leopold was a pioneer in ecology and land conservation. He believed in the Land Ethic.

A land ethic, then, reflects the existence of an ecological conscience, and this in turn reflects a conviction of individual responsibility for the health of land.

Soil is alive, nurturing, bountiful and home to many organisms, microbes and bacteria working in harmony and sychronicity. All together these living creatures together with the soil grow and provide us with delicious nutrition healthy food and fruit.  Soil needs air and sunlight and nutrients, just like any living creature. Unfortunatly our modern farming methods encourage overuse of toxic chemicals, overplowing, maltreatment, and overall disruption of this vital, delicate ecosystem.  This leads to erosion, unhealthy sick soil, soil sterility, toxic soil that causes mineral chelation in plants leading to mineral deficient plants and mineral deficient food.

Instead, this ecosystem can be managed to provide nutrients for plant growth, absorb and hold rainwater for use during dryer periods, filter and buffer potential pollutants from leaving our fields, serve as a firm foundation for agricultural activities, and provide habitat for soil microbes to flourish and diversify to keep the ecosystem running smoothly.  http://www.nrcs.usda.gov/wps/portal/nrcs/main/soils/health/

Unfortunately our modern farming methods do not allow the soil to retain its beautiful life and elegant ecosystem structure. Instead toxic pesticides, commercial fertilizer loaded with Ko61 waste, fumigants, and GMO seeds sterilize soil, destroy beneficial microbes, bind minerals and transform what once was bounty to a skeletal structure. To rebuild soil consider composting and adding wood ash, reducing application of pesticides and commercial fertilizer.

Bees in Danger = Food Supply in Danger = People in Danger

Beautiful Giving Bees, though they never ask for anything from us are responsible for pollinating these foods we love: Apples, Strawberries, Cherries, Watermelon, Squash, Pumpkin, Lentils, Beans, Onions, Peanuts, Olives, Alfalfa, Peaches, Pears, Grapes, Coffee, Coco, Cranberries, Almonds, Broccoli, Blueberries, Cucumber, Cotton, and more…

Because of Glyphosate (the herbicide used dominantly within GMO farming) produced by Monsanto along with Neonicitinoid Pesticides created by Bayer,  Bees are suffering to near extinction. All pollinators are under threat and people and animals of all kinds are suffering from the use of glyphosate. Can you imagine the world without them and the wonderful foods they provide for us? Without their pollinating magic there’d be little left for us to eat other than a few grains and water, malnutrition would be rampant. Malnutrition opens the gateway for disease and off we go; not a good outcome. For bees’ sake as well as for our own, can’t we help end the use, misuse, and abuse of toxic pesticides?

Modern Farming & Climate Change

Back in the early ’90s I was part of the Green Peace team canvassing throughout Chicago discussing Dioxins and the wretched effects of Chlorine on the Ozone Layer and our waterways. While much discussion and concern about the Ozone layer has quelled since then, there still seems to be evidence of continuing harm. Situated in the stratosphere, the Ozone Layer serves to protect us from harmful UV rays. While the Montreal Protocol was created to phase out ozone depleting chemicals worldwide, in some cases these chemicals and others known as hydroCFCs are still in use.

One notorious ozone depleter, banned but still being used is Methyl Bromide. The EPA exempts Methyl Bromide for fumigating soil for crops such as strawberries, tomatoes, and peppers. The EPA has approved Dow Chemical’s Sulfuryl Fluoride as a substitue for methyl bromide, but that’s hardly a good idea as one of its side effect is vacuolation of the brain’s white matter!  Methyl Bromide and Sulfuryl Fluoride both cause health problems and both are greenhouse gases. In fact Sulfuryl Fluoride is nearly 5000 times more destructive as a greenhouse gas than Carbon Dioxide.

Other ozone-depleting toxic chlorine-based pesticides recognized as Persistent Organic Pollutants were phased out around the world through the Stockholm Convention.  The US government never joined this convention and still permits banned substances to be produced here and exported for use in other parts of the world. If we do recognize climate change as a major threat to our well being, then certainly banning the manufacturing and exporting of these substances might help. The time has come for the US to get serious about toxic chemicals and ratify both the Stockholm and Rotterdam Conventions. Afterall, doing all we can to help eliminate these chemicals will in turn help all of us and our health.

STATE OF THE OZONE LAYER

The hole above Antarctica still remains, and now for the first time ever we have a hole over the Arctic. Perhaps this proves there’s still too much chlorine and ozone depleting substances being manufactured and put into production. Or perhaps this means there’s much more causing harm to the atmosphere than what we’ve been led to believe. Either way, the toxic chemical effect on the atmosphere must not be forgotten. America should be leading the way in understanding and taking action toward creating a healthier atmosphere.

OTHER WAYS MODERN FARMING

CONTRIBUTES TO GLOBAL CLIMATE ISSUES

Conventional large scale farmers use tremendous amounts of poisonous chemical pesticides as well as synthetic commercial fertilizer that releases Nitrous Oxide. One pound of nitrous oxide contributes 300 times more to ‘global warming’ than one pound of carbon dioxide. Additionally nitrous oxide seems to be getting stronger and causing more harm as lingering CFCs vanish.  If one of our main objectives in preventing climate change is reducing carbon emissions, then we will have to step away from things that contribute to more nitrous oxide.  We will also have to lower our use of pesticides in general for they are derived from what else, petrochemicals. And as we all have been told in the drive to reduce carbon, fossil fuels should become less involved with our lives not more.

Then there’s factory farms. Without pollution regulation cess ponds of manure are created releasing vast amounts of methane and more nitrous oxide, both greenhouse gases.  Without any pollution regulation enforced by the government, these farms violate the Clean Air Act and clean water standards everyday. Sadly factory farms also commit horrible acts of neglect toward animals and wildly ignore animal welfare laws.

Modern farming further contributes through the practice of monocropping, which allows vast swaths of land to be cleared– oftentimes grasslands or prairie to make room for farming. This practice demands tremendous application of both pesticides and fertilizer, contributes to erosion, pollution run-off, and aquatic dead zones. Destroying grasslands, prairies, and natural carbon sinks does not fit into the climate change prevention model. If anything it makes our situation worse.

On top of all this modern farming contributes to soil destruction, mineral depletion, disease, and obesity. GMO farming methods sterilize soil as well as bind and chelate minerals in the soil creating plants and end food products that are mineral deficient. It’s been found that one of the links and perhaps greatest causes for over eating is that the body is starving for minerals. Until the mineral requirements are fulfilled, a person or animal is more likely to keep eating. How many diseases are a result of mineral deficieny? Magnesium alone is needed for over 100 bodily functions, without enough magnesium the human body simply cannot perform or function completely.  Think about it, do the GMO or pesticides companies care if their products cause disease? Their pharmaceutical division will certainly have the remedy ready for you.

Supporting organic farming not only helps your and your family’s health but it helps the the whole planet as well.
